Fun on the MRT

This weekend Angela and I got to go over to Eugene for the weekend (and miss out on all of the PPP hoopla). We decided to stop and ride up the McKenzie River Trail on our way over on Saturday. After the obligatory stop at Big O Bagel, we finally left Bend at 8AM. It rained the whole way over the pass…which made us question whether to ride or try it the next day on our way back. We decided to ride, figuring the trees would keep us pretty dry. As soon as we parked the car @ Paradise, the rain stopped and we got ready to ride. The trail was in awesome shape, and the fact that it was ‘supposed’ to be raining kept everyone else off the trail. We rode up to the Blue Pool parking lot, which was about 13 miles or so, then turned around and came all the way back down. In 4 hours of riding, we saw all of about 6 other cyclists and about the same number of hikers. It was so nice. And the weather stayed perfect all day – cool enough to wear arm warmers and knee warmers, but just barely.

The MRT is a great trail. I don’t think it is the best trail in Oregon, but I think it has become one of my top 5 favorites. For anyone who hasn’t ridden the MRT, you definitely should. And pray that you get it almost all to yourself like we did this weekend! (you probably won’t after this weekend).

2011 Cascade Chainbreaker

We had our annual Cascade Chainbreaker XC race last weekend and thanks to all the racers, volunteers, spectators and sponsors. It was a great success! Too bad the weather didn’t cooperate as much as it had in past years. We got a little bit of everything–sun, wind, rain, and snow. Most riders loved it and it helped knock the dust down. Those that ended up getting a bit too cold had a harder day. Luckily, we had coffee, hot dogs and veggie burgers waiting for all the racers to help feed and warm them up after their race. Not mention the delicious Chainbreaker White IPA from Deschutes Brewery.

Ryan Trebon took first place in the pro men’s race finishing the 38 mile race in 2h 40m. And, Alice Pennington won the pro women’s race covering the 25 mile course in just under 2h 4m. The Return of Winter

The morning commute was a bit slow going at times

but the Racing Commuter rolled on like the champ that it is

Winter came back Tuesday morning with a vengeance. Had to shovel the driveway 3 times before hoping on the bike to get to work. I have been commuting for 19 years now, no car at all, haven’t owned one. And I am always glad that I am on my bike rather than in a car. But days like Tuesday make it even more enjoyable. Sure you need to worry about traffic a little more even though everyone is going slower. I typically alter my route so I don’t need to worry about those sliding cars or careless drivers as much. Back to Tuesday, after working my way over unplowed roads and paths I made it to work only to have the power go out for the next 5 hours. At first we were working (what work we could do) by headlamp. Then we pulled the generator out and were able to get some lighting in the service department. At the end of the day I was excited to get back on my bike for the commute home. The rain/snow had let up but I still suited up in my rain gear and made my way home around and through both puddles and snow banks. A very fun day of commuting. I’d like to say “here’s to another 19 years,” but I’m not sure how much longer it will last. Melissa and I have a kid coming in 5 weeks and perhaps a that means a second car. Sure we’ll have the trailer but I think my streak will come to an end before I get another 19 years.

2010 CX Nats

This past weekend Bend was host to the 2010 Cyclocross Nationals. 5 days of ‘cross racing in some very muddy conditions. With 3 days to go before the racing began we still had 6″ of snow on the ground, but luckily the temp rose a bit and we got a ton of rain (very atypical weather for Bend). There were definitely some slick conditions a couple of the mornings, and it was definitely cold for some of those races (especially Saturday morning when it was 31 degrees and raining), but by the time the pros came out on Sunday afternoon, the sun was out and the temp had risen to about 50 degrees. The course was still muddy as shit, but the nice weather brought out the crowds. An estimated 10,000 people were out to cheer on our local favorites including Ryan Trebon (2nd), Adam Craig (7th), and Carl Decker (18th). The crowd was deafening every time Ryan came through closing the gap on Todd Wells. I hope he was wearing earplugs.

Other locals did great throughout the weekend as well. Adam Craig won the Single Speed division with Brennan Wodtli (5th), Cody Peterson (6th), and John Rollert (10th) rounding out the top 10. Karen Kenlan, Lance Haidet, Damian Schimtt, Shay Frazier, Shane Johnson all got top 5 finishes in their races. It was really fun watching all of the locals racing. There are way too many to mention, but we could cheer for Bend riders in just about every race.

This was the last year for the CX Nats in Bend. Next year we get to host the Master Road Nats and the MTB Marathon Nats. The CX Nats are moving to Madison, WI for the next two years. I’m hoping that Angela wants to go race again next year because it will give me an excuse to go visit my high school and college buddies back in WI.

Bike season is officially over in Bend. Time to ski for a few months.

First Ride on the NUT

Angela and I just got back from a weekend at the North Umpqua Trail. This was my first visit to the NUT, and it most definitely won’t be my last. We went down to celebrate the B-day of our friend Jefe – it ends up being a big weekend of riding, eating well, and drinking lots of Deschutes beer.

The trail is 80 some miles long and is broken up into 11 separate sections. We missed the Friday ride (work really gets in the way sometimes) which was the lower stuff (Panther, Mott, and Tioga) but I am pretty glad we did because the guys who rode said it was wet and muddy and they rode for about 6 hours. So after that huge ride and a bunch of beer, I knew that no one would really want to push it too hard the next day We woke up Saturday to sunny skies and the temp was just above 70 degrees. It was perfect. We shuttled up and rode Deer Leap down to Calf. The ride was awesome. We rode about 21 miles of trail in about 5 hours (and 4 miles of road). The trail is breathtaking and has a ton of exposure, but for some reason it didn’t really bother me at all. I wish I had pictures to show, but I’m terrible at remembering to bring my camera.

The climbs are super steep and there is a lot of technical stuff to keep you on your toes. It was a blast. I’ve never used my front derailleur so much in my life. I was glad that I had just installed one of those K-Edge chain keeper devices – never had to even think about it.

The next day we rode shuttled up and rode Dread & Terror and Hot Springs. The name Dread & Terror definitely makes it sound tough, but I thought it was by far the best section. Yes, there might have been even more exposure on the trail, but it had more rippin’ sections and didn’t have the quite the climbs that we had on the previous day. The downhill on Hot Springs was pretty amazing as well. I only got freaked out on one little climb that got a little slick, but other than that, tried not to pay attention to the river below.

Besides going over the edge and falling into the river, the next biggest thing to fear is the poison oak. I’m not really sure if I am allergic to it or not, but I tried to avoid it as much as possible, which is hard to do. Angela definitely got some on her arm, and hopefully that is it, we’ll see in the next day or two.

I can’t wait to go back and do the remainder of the trail, and re-do what I already rode. It was amazing. It only took me 14 years to get down there (all of 110-150 miles away depending on where you camp). Hopefully I can return within the next month or two, but I also hope to hit oakridge again and maybe St Helens and Hood River as well. Should be a good summer.

Cascade Chainbreaker – UPDATED RESULTS

Today was the Cascade Chainbreaker Mountain bike race. We had just over 400 racers altoghether. We had a ton of great prizes from a ton of great companies – including Deschutes Brewery, Coke, Dasani, Powerade, Chris King Components, Surly, Salsa, Co-Motion, Redvines, Bendistillery, Pizza Mondo, Hammer Nutrition, Park Tool, Niner, Ellsworth, Twin Six, Dirtrag, Oury, Strictly Organic, White Industries, Blenderz, Adventure Chiropractic, and more…

We lucked out on the weather. Thanks for all of the help from all of the volunteers – way to many to remember – but especially Bert & Dani, Rob & Steph, Sam “El” HandELman, the Westbergs, Amy & Aaron, Amy N., DickieG & FJ, Henry & Amy, Heidi, Andrey Y, Dan & Brian, the whole WebCyclery Team, Marcel and his whole crew, and…..I’m starting to pass out from not eating….oh, and of course MeanTodd. Ding Dong the Bus is Dead!

The WebCyclery bus is dead. After having a couple of mechanics take a look at it, the diagnosis is that the tranny is SHOT. A new tranny will cost twice as much as the bus cost, and a used tranny will still cost a lot with installtion. Since we only really drive it a few hundred miles a year, that’s just too much. So the bus is going to go away. If anyone out there needs a perfectly good Detroit Deisel engine, I’ve got a really good running engine that needs a home, along with new batteries and a pair of really good tires. Cheap too!

Trying new things

It's not that I don't like technology, because I do. But chasing technology is a pain in the ass. I'm talking about computers and software and social media and all of that fun stuff, but it also pertains to bikes. As soon as you buy that brand new SRAM XX kit, something else will come out and be just a little bit lighter or cooler or whatever. Sure, you still have a super hot bike, but a month or two later the next years model will debut. Unfortunately, with the increase in social media, one has to keep up on not only where one needs to be present, but all of the different ways to get there. And software changes so much that things become obsolete pretty fast (well, maybe not obsolete, but not cutting edge).I could spend my entire work week, everyweek, dealing with computer issues/software/website/social media stuff and not spend a second on the sales floor or phone, and I would still never get to the end of my 'to do' list. Sometimes it is a little frustrating, sometimes a little overwhelming, and sometimes I just don't like it. Then again, sometimes I learn a cool new thing or two and taht always makes my day a little better. I love learning new things and figuring out better ways of doing things. That's why I continue to try new things (except when it comes to vegetables).

Switching to WordPress

I am in the process of switching our blogs (WebCyclery, WebSkis, and Solda). What a pain in the butt! Then I get to keep working on stuff for the Cascade Chainbreaker which is only a week and a half away!
